As we’ve said, we’re hearing more and more from curators and gallery owners who have been using bakerartistawards.org as a resource for putting together shows and exhibitions. But they’re not the only one’s. Using the “Favorites” feature on the website, anyone signed up can put together a show or collection of their favorite artwork. In the coming months, we’ll be taking a look at some of the collections we’ve come across.
These favorites are brought to you by Peter Barry……
“In looking at the 12 nominations as a group, I see a consistency in what I recognize and lean towards in my own work: balance, content, placement, and the provocation of emotion and thought. These all have a layered depth that can move me, comfortably or not, but they do produce a response or a questioning. The visual expressions I have selected range from figurative to abstract, in styles I call: story telling, cataloging/record keeping, theatre, and messaging.”
Gee's Bend, Image No. 43, Arlonzia Pettway, by Linda Day Clark
“There are volumes of stories in the photography of Linda Day Clark, and stories can be effectively delivered with attention to the elements. I am always drawn to intentional compositions, and this is what I see and feel looking at her work, and the other nominations I have picked.”
lcox01, by Laura Cox
“The use of contrasts, both in color and shape in Laura Cox’s paintings have an underlying tension that sparks an off balance that gets your attention. Her “cox1″ flirts with chaos, but under examination reveal a flow of order.”
Once We Have Passed, by Dave Purcell
purcell.d_16, by Dave Purcell
“Dave Purcell’s “Once We Have Passed” feels like passing and coming, exiting and entering, covering and exposing. His “purcell.d_16″ and it’s urban flavor all the more contrast his organic “Planar Forms.”
“In Person Ablach’s “One Play, No Actors” there is more empathy in 16 seconds, than in most 2 hour mainstream theatrical movies. The flailing limbs, and opposing direction of the two parts of what I identify as a body produce strong feelings deep in me.”
from the Captive and Comfortable series, by Sarah Ball
Lone Tree, by Joseph Hyde
“The Portrait of Joseph Hyde’s “Lone Tree” and Sarah Ball’s winking man in “Captive and Comfortable” are minimalistically rich, it’s something about a white background.”
437-435 Old Town Mall, East Baltimore 2010, by James Singewald
“The cataloguing of the building portraits in James Singewald’s “437-435 Old Town Mall, East Baltimore 2010″ are graphically, and photographically clean.”
Peter also had this to say regarding the Baker Artist Awards: “I have enjoyed all of my involvement with Baker Artist Awards. Throughout the time between October 1 2010 and the closing I have read on your blog, the suggestions to consider explaining our work, and ourselves. The beauty of the Baker Artist Awards is that of a community of expressive people. I have found a feeling of a Baker community not only in the nominees, but also in the people in the Baker organization. I have been grateful for the stimulus that not only has allowed me to reconsider, reexamine, and reassess my work, but also the work of expressive people around me. I continue to view work nominated for the first time, and revisit work that I have already seen since the opening nomination. I feel we all move forward from here, richer.”
