Throughout the month of September, to coincide with the exhibit at The Baltimore Museum of Art and to celebrate another year with the Baker Artist Awards, we’ve invited several galleries to exhibit shows curated from BakerArtistAwards.org. With the show at the BMA now underway, the satellite exhibits are now approaching and have openings of their own just around the corner.
The Silber Art Gallery in the Goucher College Athenaeum is the home of Goucher’s permanent collection and its critically acclaimed program of contemporary art exhibitions. With 1,000 square feet of exhibition space and a 21-foot ceiling, the gallery is a beautiful space and puts on a range of programming, from the traditional to the experimental. Featuring the work of emerging artists and established names alike, it is an excellent place for an exhibition, and we couldn’t be happier that they are hosting one of this year’s September Baker Exhibitions.
Curated by Savanna Leigh, Travis Levasseur, and Sage Dever, Obscurities features the work of 16 artists nominated for the 2011 Baker Artist Awards. The exhibit opens
TOMORROW, September 22nd, from 6pm – 8pm
The high quality of work in this exhibit is not just outstanding, but it’s going to be awesome to see so many Baker artists in one place! Take a deep breath; Obscurities highlights the work of:
Using bakerartistawards.org as a resource for Obscurities, the curators saw a common thread in the work they were finding on the site: “As we were selecting artists for this group show, we were struck by the reoccurring themes of abstraction and distance. Each piece describes a departure from form, place, communication, or identity; captures the mystery and anxiety therein; and invites the viewer to peer closely and discover the obscure.” It’s exciting to see curators drawing connections and finding common themes between different artist’s work on the site, and we’re thrilled to see how this one looks in the gallery.
With so much great work and excellent artists, tomorrows opening is sure to be a success. Don’t miss it! Here’s the info:
