Figurative Paintings from 2008
My paintings are rooted in the traditions of oil painting. I am very interested in the process and aesthetics of the Renaissance and 19th Century masters; their exploration of the medium has had a major influence on my work. I build each image up from an under painting, selectively adding and subtracting paint from the surface, until there is a harmonized feeling to the entire painting. I am interested in the textures that can be achieved with glazes, utilizing the grain of the canvas and thicker areas of paint to create depth on a very thin plane. Keeping a consistent and aesthetically pleasing surface is a major aspect throughout my painting process. Working in this way underlines my interest and appreciation of the physicality of paint and its possibilities.
The subject matter of my paintings are simplified figural compositions. As with the paint quality, I am very selective with the amount of information I put into each painting. I work with shallow spaces that have strong geometric elements, counteracted by implied or subtle angles. By narrowing everything down to the essential elements, I am able to explore the qualities of subtlety, both within the figures themselves and the large color fields. By exploring these facets, I have been able to created my own style and visual vocabulary.
