My current work is representing views in a grid, composed with tape, chalk lines, and paint, worked with palette knife, multiple layers of acrylic, yielding intersubjective surfaces attuned to the transformation of visual information display in the familiar browser window interface; alludes to the internet as global telepathic prosthesis.

Incorporating photographic influence, cinematic storyboards, printmaking techniques, and painting, into a synthesized, pixellated environment.

About this Project

A ten-year travel journal, through more than a dozen studios and sixty exhibitions in ten years; the experience of psychological and temporal transformation is manifested in the painting process, product and practice, while the logistics of the studio in turn facilitate an understanding of the information absorbed through this exploration into object-oriented programming as a way of living in consensus reality.

About this Project

A two month residence on Maui, the Hawai'ian islands being the most geographically remote location on the planet. Swimming in deep surf on the north shore, and experiencing the rain forest of the east end of the island, Hana and Hamoa Beach, and the lush Iao Valley, and painting the supremely powerful landscape of these large volcanic islands, I exhibited these art works at Sargent's Fine Art gallery in Lahaina.

Not only a transcendent experience but also a key element of the emerging concept of this path as a larger picture, the narrative of Exploratory Searchery, a journey through art and geography which would inform my interest in mapping and bringing together these different ideas as they emerged.

Travel, and painting. A two month residence in Bologna, home of the oldest university in the world, founded in 980. This medieval city provided a backdrop of architectural foundations and the fascinating story of the Renaissance commedia dell'arte theater, based on the traditions of performing arts since ancient times.

Mixed media works on paper comprised of sketches, drawings and watercolors, visiting various cities, and assimilating scenery and ideas about the theater and culture of northern Italy.

Design, creation and installation of a corporate collection for the law firm of Funk & Bolton in Baltimore, for their headquarters offices at 36 South Charles Street.

The firm's partners accepted my proposal and acquired a collection of 26 paintings, based on the seascapes and geometric abstractions which formed the basis of my work, as well as the latest landscapes resulting from a two-month residence in Bologna, Italy. Colorful and lush paintings, with a collage appearance and textural techniques, created to inspire and facilitate creative thinking.

About this Project

My first solo exhibition with Norman Parish Gallery in Georgetown, Washington, DC. I created thirty paintings from which we selected 15 pieces for the show. Parish Gallery represents more than 100 artists and has been in Washington since 1991.

The paintings were directed at synthesizing the geometric works with the seascape compositions. Though I naively pursued this in a more literal than conceptual direction, I think the process tends to reveal possibilities that perhaps can be arrived at only by iteration. A very austere exhibition resulted, which I since realized could have been much more eclectic, but in any case it was a great success.

This gallery relationship put my prices above twenty-five hundred, which also enabled me to continue traveling and feel that the art career would be sustainable, and led to relationships with more collectors.

Norman also has been an astute and ongoing help in critique and development by virtue of his patience and insight.

About this Project

My first gallery exhibitions took place at the newly opened Exploding Head Gallery in Sacramento, California, in 2002, as part of a continuing series of seascapes and geometric abstractions inspired by travel, Burning Man, and the turn of the millennium, leading to the ongoing pursuit of painting as a full-time experience from 2001 to the present.

The large gallery space in downtown Sacramento represented several hundred local and national artists from 2001 until 2006. I brought them a book of slides shortly after they had just opened; I was pounding the pavement in my new hometown and was referred from another gallery, just the basic process of visiting every gallery in town with portfolio in hand, and getting lucky.

About this Project

Paintings resulting from a five-week residence in a secluded cove outside of Puerto Ayora, the main town on the central island of Santa Cruz, in the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador, also known as Las Islas Encantadas, the Enchanted Isles.

The confluence of volcanic energy and the equatorial magnetic field creates an environment of mystical clarity and crackling immediacy, while the traveler views under bright sunlight the wildlife and seascapes surrounded by black rocks and white sand.

A national park adjacent to Tortuga Bay, from the scenic beaches to an inland desert of cactus surrounded by thorn trees and quicksand, the small island 600 miles west of the Ecuadoran coast offers a living laboratory of experience remote from civilization.
