The Jewelry Project is a part of the art program at House Of Ruth Maryland. The way that it works: shelter residents work with volunteers to design and make jewelry; sometimes volunteers teach clients, and often clients teach volunteers.

The jewelry is made in exchange for a jewelry making kit or supplies to make more accessories, promoting continued art making.

100% of the proceeds from the Jewelry Project goes back into the House Of Ruth Maryland's emergency shelter based art program.

The jewelry is for sale in Baltimore City at the Women's Industrial Exchange and Shine Collective, and is now available on Etsy!

Art + Craft at Artscape 2008 offered free craft tutorials to passersby as a part of A Full Service Garage. Participating artists and topics included: Johanna Barthmaier, Bookbinding; Ellen Nielsen, Collaborative Crochet; Kendra Hebel, Rags to Rugs; Leslie Rogers, Toilette Paper Tube Marionettes; Erica Phillippe, Doll-Making; Christine Herz, Hairwraps; and Hannah Brancato, Tassels.

About this Project

In a time when the textile and electronics industry in the United States is virtually extinct, the Bright Light Carpets highlight the similarities between textiles and technology. Woven on a four-shaft loom, they explore the structure of carpets and of circuits. The weavings ask us to attend to our senses by playfully teaching the user how circuits work, suggesting that self-discovery and contemplation are essential to everyday experience. Like an exhibit at a children’s museum, the Bright Light Carpets provide an opportunity to teach ourselves; and perhaps they can help us re-consider how invisible technologies affect our lifestyles.

Curtain Walk was a temporary installation made in collaboration with Alison Mazur for the Transmodern Festival's 2008 Pedestrian Service Exquisite. The walkway was installed in the ally behind Load of Fun gallery, creating a whirlwind of silk and color as an interactive backdrop to the day's performances and events.

Hotel Home is comprised of my thesis work, and was completed in December 2007 when I was awarded by BFA Fiber from MICA. Comfort, location, and the effects of design began to be addressed here, and have continued into my more recent work.
