About this Project

Upon closer observation all aspects of life can be considered a repetition of patterns. Mathematical patterns such as spirals and fractals are found everywhere: from the turning vortex of an atom to the great celestial bodies spinning in the sky.

Many of these patterns can be described as self-similar, which is defined as the whole having the same shape as one or more of the parts. The appearance of these patterns is unchanged, no matter the scale. When considering all existence is a part of this infinite pattern, an interesting question arises; where on this vast scale do we as humans, as a planet exist?

The concept that all life is self-similar inspires me to create sculpture, which references the macro and micro, the past and future, the simple and complex. The work represents the geometric and organic, and explores the concept of infinite scales and mathematical repetition.

These collection of sculptures were made primarily of clay, then either painted with acrylics or glazed. Each one is a study in growth patterns.

With this recent line of work I am merging my sculptural imagery with my functional wares. The body of the vessel is thrown with either slip cast additions or carved symbols.

Glass and clay fascinate me for many of the same reasons. The challenge, the versatility, the fire, the process from soft and yielding to cold and still, and the community atmosphere that surrounds the medium. The major difference for me, and one that I cannot fully explain, is that more often than not when making glass object I choose to go functional, as opposed to clay, where sculpture is my passion.

About this Project

As a resident artist in Hungary I produced many wall hanging porcelain forms. Once back in Baltimore I began to find places for them by painting wooded panels and adhering them permanently to the surface. These works are very lighthearted, as I see them as fun sketches, a way for me to explore color and pattern that will later be applied to a larger surface, as part of an installation.

About this Project

I constructed a small book called The Aesthetics of Mathematics. Each set of pages has a mathematical drawing, then a corresponding image on the opposing page of how the math appears in nature.

About this Project

Drawing is a the root to all visual arts, and for me it is a great exercise. Whether drawing from observation, or from imagination, it is a way to keep my eye sharp and my hands moving.
