Intimate Conversations
Wood wrapped in digitally printed vellum
Embracing the complexities of what it is to be a woman, be feminine, these three triangular objects symbolize those complexities while showing the beauty of them from all angles such as form, texture, and tone.

Pieces of Me
Pieces of Me is a 3 dimensional photo-sculpture that explores the self through the figure. The photographs printed on vellum encased in a glass structure comments on the fragility of ones identity, confidence, acceptance, strength, and vulnerability.

I Still Have a Dream, Persistence, Untitled are from the Black Male Identity Project Collective. The Black Male Identity is a project of the non-profit organization Art on Purpose, with the audacious goal of using art to build, celebrate, and accentuate new images of what it means to be a black man or boy.

Overview

With the passing of my father on 2009 I struggled with making artwork related to our relationship, but I felt the need to make the work. Starting last year I began working with ideas of how I wanted to translate our bond, and how I am continuing to deal with his passing.

In Her Father's Eyes is a personal piece about the physical and spiritual bond between a Father and Daughter.

Overview

With this series of photographs I hope to raise questions and awareness about the problems that continue to plague the black community; poverty, drugs, and violence. How are these issues affecting children within this community, and can conversation eventually lead to action and/or change. By incorporating statistical information, interviews, and photography I hope to open the topic for discussion about accountability, responsibility, and the possibilities for solutions. I look at these "Greatest City in America" benches photographed as a conversation piece; a window into the other side of what is really considered to be the greatest.

Overview

This piece includes color photographs printed on transparencies. These images are projected slides of my mother and sister from early 1970, self portraits, and self portraits of me interacting with these projected images. There are five books with three transparent images in each that create interchangeable "layers of memories." Each book is a handmade flip / tunnel book which are stored in a handmade keepsake box.

These memories are part of me, but occurred before I was born. I find it very interesting how we build these strong connections to imagery even though they are not linked to us directly. With this project I wanted to work with these images and create a piece that expressed this connection and what it means to me.

Overview

This project consists of eight 35mm in camera double exposed images. Along with 8x10 glossy C prints, these images were made into an accompanying according fold book. The book, "Mama Said..." is accordion fold handmade book that reads...."Mama said...stay sweet, Mama said...stay innocent, Mama said...believe in your dreams, Mama said...stay me"

Inspired by my twelve year old daughter I wanted to focus on how society can affect the choices of young girls because of what they see in magazines, on television, or hear on the radio, and how as a mother there comes a time when you have to trust the foundation you have established in her to always remember what Mama said?.

Overview

Us as women take on all kinds of roles throughout our life and we have a connection just because we are women. Today it is hard to find the "good" sister that we can turn to. I feel as though so many of today?s women look at the other woman as their competition instead of a team player. Each woman was asked to respond to a post with descriptive words, quotes, sayings, etc that describe themselves. In the end our connection came together through words. The words which are the roots illustrated in the book are the words that were similar in their responses. This connection is an example of how we are alike, and how we are all truly sisters!

Overview

This series was done at a point in my life where major life changes were happening all around me and causing me to enter into another stage of my adult life. I believe we are molded by life and the people in it, into these ever changing individuals. Sometimes we like what we have become, sometimes we may not, and sometimes we are not too sure. This self-portrait series explores just that, the different emotions and feelings that are not always defined by words, but that we all experience.

Overview

Five 16x20 panels installed into larger then life size self portrait. Real found and collected tree bark was used to create the "walls" of the tree. Each panel tells a story about growth, expression, obstacles, accomplishments, and more while collectively growing into what has become to be known as me.
