I have always been fascinated by crumbling, ruinous structures?the deterioration of once beautiful things. Parts of this city, sadly, are post apocalyptic. The juxtaposition of the original buildings, usually geometric, planned and orderly, invaded by the visceral tears, gaping holes, and insidious cracks, have a profound visual and psychological weight.
There are two separate paintings posted here though they are very closely related.

This was based on a large window made of glass blocks. It was in on a building in the alley of my former apartment. The less than savory activities of the neighborhood left their marks all over it--- multiple cracks, some stuffed with paper, a little whiskey bottle, and of course, tags. As a side note, this may be the most time consuming painting I have ever made.

This was a small run down building I found near Hamden. I enjoy the fight between the pipes and the weeds.

My first painting of ruins was inspired by a trip to an island off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. Here I saw Gukanjima Island, a small island that once functioned as a city but was completely abandoned and left to the ravages of nature.

These paintings range widely. What they have in common is that they are the paintings I do in between large paintings. I guess they are like short stories to the novelist. Breaks to play with ideas and to move through them quickly.
There are three images that do not fall in this category. They are the "Orange Man" watercolor paintings. They are part of a project that I have been working on loosely, since 1998.
