This is a new and/or newer grouping of paintings, some shown in All After All Before at Causey Contemporary, others shown at the Hamiltonian Gallery in DC this spring. In some there is the use of heaps and residual piles, the types of structures nature leaves in its wake. While in others there's an exploration of the accumulative nature of birds nest in conjunction with Utopian modern architecture.

These are from a series of drawings that were made as a part of collaboration/response project I worked on with writer Joseph Young in 2009. I was given a selection of his poems to respond to, he as given a selection of my drawings to respond to. These are a few of my responses.

I was asked to do an installation along with my paintings for this show. The space was rather small and after a few failing attempts at a larger installation, I changed my approach and created these small sculptures/structure studies. These gestures were created and installed in response to the paintings.

In my paintings vast, often desolate, spaces are depicted. Referencing the arctic or the desert, they are invented environments posing the question: where do we go from here? Structures appear within the landscape, some proposing a possible system of communication, others referring to a vulnerable and perhaps futile attempt to create shelter. The structures and systems created are illogical; they are delicate and makeshift in a way that may not endure their own weight, let alone the impending disruptions. Yet, they are made, and to me they reference the sustained need to try, to build, to create, even in the face of complete futility.
