Site-specific installations for the 1700 block of North Charles Street in Baltimore City. Both works respond to the urban conditions at time of installation, and utilize environment and materials to determine form and meter.

These de-animations are the manifestation of long-duration performances in which inanimate objects are animated in real-time and site-specific situations. The performances are then documented in stop-motion, condensing the action into brief video sequences. These de-animations capture and condense real-time into a synoptic of movement and passage as a photograph would ordinarily condense or capture time and movement into a still image. They allow the inanimate to move, and perpetuate the ephemeral action and performance that existed solely for the audience of the camera.

"Smoke as Words" is a continuation of Glebes's site specific gestures investigating, via smoke signals and ancient telegraphic codes sent by torch, themes of illegibility, communication, and language.

project description: In "Untitled "Notice is Hereby Given)," Glebes built a station in a derelict lot that facilitated the assemblage of biodegradable water balloon seed bombs. Rainwater, harvested in the barrel, was mixed by willing participants, with wildflower seeds, then squeezed into balloons. The participants were encouraged to throw their balloons in the other feral lots in the alley. This work was installed as part of the Spring 2010 Axis Alley Exhibition.

Glebes's Exhibition entitled "In Defense of Native Soil" was installed at University of Maryland Baltimore County's Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture in the spring of 2009. The work used the seemingly benign dandelion to discuss issues of the suburban environment, our received and circumscribed routines, the use of the art object as a tool for social change, and the control of the uncontrollable.

Overview

The drawings in this series are traces of moving shadows. The graphite lines, after being drawn on paper, are etched with a needle into acetate. The acetate is then mounted ever so slightly above the paper on register with the original drawing. When viewed with a flashlight, shadows are cast by the acetate on the graphite lines. As the viewer investigates the drawing with the light, the lines shift and bend.
