Overview
Our lives exist as a series of experiences. One situation leads into another, influencing those that follow. This convoluted network of people, places, and events form our base understanding of who we are as individuals. The memories and emotions instigated by such events drive us to become the people we are.
The colors, forms, and textures of the Substance paintings evoke the occurrence of specific emotions felt throughout the course of our lives. While emotive in nature, the layering of pigment, drips, and glazes allows me to contemplate the common threads of human experience, such as the acceptance of our weaknesses and burdens, the overcoming and resolution of guilt, coming to terms with our heritage and past, and the search for higher meaning and comfort. Conceived to have a reverent quality, these paintings speak about the importance of internal experience.
